What is a Light Box?

A light box is a prolific tool specifically designed for artists and it consists of a backlit piece of plexiglass or frosted glass. Many visual artists use light box for looking at photographic negatives and tracing. A lot of art supply stores sell a variety of light boxes, though one can make their own light box at home too.

A light box is a also called a light table. In a specific light table, the box is mounted on adjustable legs and a swivel, creating a large backlit workspace which can be rotated to various angles as per requirement.

A notable difference between light box and light table is that light box is more portable as it lacks legs. Though in some cases, a light box can be very large and difficult to move.

The position of the lights in a light box is very significant. The idea is to achieve smooth, crisp lighting without hot spots. Diffusers and numerous other lights are frequently used to achieve this. The glass or plexiglass is generally fogged or shaded to decrease glare from the lights beneath.

The term “light box” is frequently used by photographers in reference to a small, custom built box for photographing objects under controlled lighting conditions. Light box is used by professional photographers to create spotless, controlled environments which can be incessantly manipulated. Diverse backdrops can be used in a light box for precise effects, and the lighting can be tainted for varied looks. For macro photography, a light box is a must.

Throw some light on your photographic equipment

Start with the basics. This is what every expert will suggest when you begin with anything, photography is an art and when you understand the art by its roots, it is always going to be fun and you will be able to experiment even more. Begin with light boxes, the most basic of all photographic equipment. You can easily make one for yourself and use it for product shooting.

Readymade light boxes are available in the market and in various price ranges depending on the material used for making the boxes. The most common ones are made of card board. They are light in weight and in case if you wish to carry it for some shoot projects, you can do that easily. There are light boxes available made of ply wood also. They are definitely more rugged and long lasting but very difficult to move when you are travelling. However, there is not much difference in the quality of the photographs you would achieve.

Light boxes are limited to product shooting and that too for smaller and medium objects. For example, you can very well use light boxes if you plan to shoot shoes, stationary, jewelry. But if you are going to shoot modular kitchens and furnishing goods, light boxes are not much of help. However, in shooting any type of subject, people follow the theory of light boxes and try to create the effect of light boxes in totality. The art of using a light box

One of the most basic equipment you would need when you go ahead with photography is a light box. It is also the simplest of all devices that can do wonders for you and you and experiment with. Knowing your light box is important and once you get an idea, you can also create one for yourself at home.

As the name suggests, light box is a box made of card board. It is convenient to have a board box to move it to places and in case you do not own a studio, you can easily carry it to places. You can decide on the size of the light box according to the product you wish to shoot. Creating a backdrop for the light box is equally important. In most of the cases it is white in color because it is easy for post processing and cutting out the object.
